Fenne Lily / Shares Official 'On Hold' Video Ahead of Debut Album Release & Headline Tour
Fenne Lily has released an official video for the title track from her soon to be released debut album, ‘On Hold’ (out April 6th). Self-directed, this DIY video project stars Fenne roller-skating around London on a mission of random acts of kindness, the unfolding of which is all captured by her friend following behind on a skateboard with a camera. Speaking about the concept for this video Fenne Lily shares: "‘On Hold’ was written as a thank you for the warmth of the world when I was at my lowest and I wanted the video that accompanied it to be a raw representation of this gratitude. Being nice is underrated. It makes me smile to watch, and dorky as it is, I feel this video communicates a joy that often goes untold."
Not many young artists can count up a massive 20 million streams off the back of the first song they’ve ever written, but then again, not many young artists are Fenne Lily. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Laura Marling as well as the swooning sound of Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, and underground 1960s psychedelic greats like Linda Perhacs, that song, ‘Top To Toe’, saw the young unknown attract global attention for her sublime songwriting ability and sharp emotional intelligence, as well as her gifted way with melody.
Fenne wrote the songs for ‘On Hold’ in sporadic bursts. Thematically, the record digs into the break-up of Fenne’s first important relationship and the pain that followed. Take, for example, the album’s title track; an upbeat, Mac DeMarco inspired tribute to Fenne’s best friend Felix, who she met immediately after the break-up: “He was also really sad. So we were just sad together and He made me feel like it was OK to feel like that.”
The album was recorded in Bristol, where Fenne is now based, and on the Isle of Wight with producers Tamu Massif and James Thorpe, as well as PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish, before then being mixed by Ali Chant who Fenne first worked with on Aldous Harding’s critically acclaimed album ‘Party’, for which Fenne provided guest vocals.
Although she sings about heartbreak, she’s quick to state that her songs aren't about wallowing in misery. “My music comes from anger, but I can’t sing angrily, so I sing sadly. It’s a sadness that’s fueled by fury.” This is Fenne all over. She’s straight up and to the point. As she puts it herself, there’s “no fannying about” when it comes to her music and that’s what makes it all the more special.
Coinciding with the album’s release, Fenne and her newly assembled band will embark on a headline tour kicking off in Cardiff on 6th April. The UK leg of the tour will take in Southampton, Brighton, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Birmingham, London, and a homecoming show in Bristol on 17th April before then moving onto mainland Europe.
