Fenne Lily / Signs With Universal Music Publishing
Bristol-based singer-songwriter Fenne Lily has just signed a global publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group.
Fenne, who released her exceptional debut album, ‘On Hold’ last month, and has just completed her first UK and European headline tour, now heads for summer festivals including Green Man and Festival Number 6.
Says Mike McCormack (MD, Universal Music Publishing UK): “We are incredibly proud to have signed the wonderful Fenne Lily. From the moment we heard songs like Top to Toe and Car Park we thought Fenne had an incredible voice and her lyrics were beautiful, sincere and emotional. Everyone at UMPG fought for this deal and we look forward to being a long and successful partner for Fenne.”
Raised in the wilds of rural Dorset to punk and Queen-loving parents, Fenne Lily first picked up the guitar aged 15. Just one year later and she’d written the delicate but powerful ‘Top To Toe’, which deftly tackled social anxiety over softly picked guitar; a song about bleak adolescence that almost everyone could relate to. That song brought global attention for her sublime songwriting ability and sharp emotional intelligence, as well as her gifted way with melody, and along with the rest of her debut album now sees her fast approaching a staggering 50 million streams.
With Fenne drawing comparisons to the likes of Laura Marling as well as the swooning sound of Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten and underground 1960s psychedelic greats like Linda Perhacs, most of her debut album digs into the break-up of her first important relationship and the pain that followed. The moody ‘Three Oh Nine’ is an anthem of acceptance and resignation following the departure of her lover that somehow manages to encompass both Lana Del Rey’s soaring majesty and Marika Hackman’s grunge-pop sass. ‘On Hold’ meanwhile, is an upbeat, Mac DeMarco inspired tribute to her best friend Felix, who she met immediately after the break-up. ‘More Than You Know’ – the second song Fenne ever wrote – was born from an obsession with the guitar sound on Bon Iver’s seminal ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ and was recorded in three takes, making for one of the more organic, minimal recordings on the album. Meanwhile, the crashing, Kate Bush-worthy ‘The Hand You Deal’ is, Fenne admits, the most harrowing song here.
Now 20 years old, Fenne Lily wrote the songs for ‘On Hold’ in sporadic bursts and recorded in Bristol and on the Isle of Wight with producers Tamu Massif and James Thorpe, as well as PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish.
