Junius Meyvant / Returns With New Album Details + New Single 'High Alert' Now Streaming Online
Júníus Meyvant has announced he’ll release his anticipated second album, ‘Across The Borders’, on 9th November via the independent Icelandic label, Record Records.
Recorded at the renowned Hljóðriti Studio on the outskirts of Reykjavik, and engineered & mixed by Guðmundur Kristinn Jónsson (Ásgeir, Erlend Oye, Hjálmar), the richly orchestrated album embraces a wide palette of sounds and is awash with soulful, charming melodies. Throughout the eleven tracks, the natural warmth of Júníus Meyvant’s unmistakeable vocals are matched and heightened by a full string section and brass ensemble, creating a hearty wall of blissful sound. ‘Across The Borders’ showcases the very finest of Júníus Meyvant’s freaky-folk pop.
Marking the album’s announcement, stand out track ‘High Alert’ is available today as a taster of what to expect from the new LP. Despite the perceived upbeat nature of ‘High Alert’, Júníus himself explains there’s actually a darker side to the origin of these lyrics: "‘High Alert’ is about one-dimensional self-pitying talk amongst grown human beings, it’s the old cliche that you get kicked out and you get lost in desperation and self-pity. One day you have it all and the next day you're looking over your shoulder because of a paranoia of wrongdoings. The song started with me playing along to the drum loop and out of that came the guitar riff, making it this one a rock tune. In the studio, we then added the cinematic 70's horn section."

Born and raised on the Westman Islands off the south coast of Iceland, Unnar Gísli Sigurmundsson has been releasing music under the moniker of Júníus Meyvant since 2014. Unnar was brought up in a musical and religious household in Heimaey (the largest island of the volcanic archipelago skirting the south coast of Iceland) and the island’s microscopic population (a mere four thousand people) and wild & rugged nature was a great playground for him to thrive.
As a young boy, he spent most of his time skateboarding, painting, and thinking about playing an instrument but never quite getting around to it. It wasn’t until his early twenties that Unnar stumbled upon a beaten-up guitar at his parents’ house and in playing this he managed to tame his inner beast. His sense for songs and melodies burst like rockets, the uncontrollable urge for writing music and a constant flow of ideas kept him tossing and turning every night and day. The debut release under the moniker of “Júníus Meyvant” was the 2014 single ‘Color Decay’ which garnered much praise across Iceland and from international publications such as KEXP and NPR. The year following, Júníus went on to received ‘Best Single’ and ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the Icelandic Music Awards, marking him as an important new talent amidst the Icelandic music scene.
After successful tours in Europe and the US, Júníus released his debut full length, ‘Floating Harmonies’ to much acclaim in 2016. ‘Across The Borders' is his first new material since that debut LP and shows his talent continues to grow just as the audiences listening to this music will. Júníus Meyvant will return to the live stage with his full band at this year’s Iceland Airwaves festival and additional international tour dates are due to be announced imminently.
