Swimming Tapes / Release 'Keep Her Closer' From Their Debut Album, Due Next Week

Swimming Tapes have released another summer-fuelled cut from their forthcoming debut album. The lilting ‘Keep Her Closer’ is a central upbeat moment on the  ‘Morningside’ album which is due for release next week, 24th May, via Hand in Hive.

Speaking of the sentiment behind this new track, Swimming Tapes share: “‘Keep Her Closer’ is a song I wrote after finding out a very young love got married. Her house had an amazing garden and I remembered all the times we went out at dusk and ran through it to the fields behind her house, escaping our parents. I just wrote it as an ode to her and in the hope that she’s happy and enjoying life.”

‘Morningside’ was recorded at Swimming Tapes’ favourite London studio: a tiny space tucked behind an old pub in Haggerston, East London, where the indie five-piece now reside. The studio is a regular haunt of the band’s long-time collaborator Paddy Baird, who produced and engineered this album, and is packed full of vintage equipment including a 1970’s SLS desk which gives ‘Morningside’ its sepia tones. In-keeping with their vintage approach, a good chunk of this album (drums, bass, and rhythm guitar) was recorded live in the round with the band layering vocals and additional guitar flourishes over the top. The record was then mixed at Wilco’s Chicago studio The Loft by Tom Schick (Real Estate, Iron & Wine). It’s a sound that’s simple to replicate on stage and lends a natural authenticity to their live show.

‘Keep Her Closer’ follows recent singles ‘Passing Ships’ and ‘Pyrenees’, with ‘Passing Ships’ in particular picking up numerous spins from 6 Music.
