Whyte Horses saw out 2019 with the release of another single from ‘Hard Times', ‘Tocyn’ featuring guest vocals from Gruff Rhys. ‘Tocyn’ was originally recorded by Welsh prog-rock band, Brân and it was Gruff himself who initially introduced Whyte Horses to the work of Brân when the band’s frontman Dom Thomas was on similar DJing circuits many years ago. Listen to 'Tocyn' HERE

Speaking about working with Gruff and their choice of track, Dom shares: “‘Tocyn’ is one of those songs that rides the line between the sublime and ridiculous but its direct Glam energy makes it instantly unforgettable.

"Gruff turned me onto a wealth of folk and psych music from the mid 1970s, mainly housed on the Cardiff based label, Sain. As well as this hotbed of music there was corresponding Fillmore style sleeve and poster art, strange imagery relayed to the Welsh National Army which all seemed to borrow from America and England.”

Whyte Horses are an elusive, psychedelic dream-pop collective from Manchester and ‘Hard Times’ is a “fantasy mixtape”, shape-shifting and re-imagining songs from an eclectic mix of musical backgrounds. Alongside Gruff Rhys, an esteemed list of vocal collaborators guest throughout the record from La Roux to John Grant, Chrysta Bell (Twin Peaks) to Badly Drawn Boy, and more.

Exploring the work of others and re-imagining them for ‘Hard Times’ was a natural step for Whyte Horses given Dom’s background as a DJ, cratedigger, and founder of the respected underground vinyl reissue label Finders Keepers, but it has also led to the group’s most ambitious collaborative project to date.
