Whyte Horses / Release New Single With John Grant And Announce New Album
The notoriously elusive Whyte Horses have announced details of their third studio album, appropriately for now entitled ‘Hard Times’ and set to be released on January 17th, 2020 through burgeoning indie label CRC Records. Described by Whyte Horses’ creator and curator Dom Thomas as a “fantasy mixtape”, the project sees this shape-shifting musical dream-pop collective re-imagining songs from an eclectic mix of musical backgrounds.
Having already released a foot-stomping cover of the seminal 1970’s track ‘Ça Plane Pour Moi’ (originally performed by the Belgian music polymath Plastic Bertrand), the album’s bombastic title track is released today as their latest single alongside the album news. ‘Hard Times’ (single) features guest vocals from John Grant, who, “Loved working with Whyte Horses on this. Spam and Oreos are right up my alley.” The grandiosity of ‘Hard Times’ (single) sets an ambitious tone for the record as a whole. Psychedelic twists and turns are rooted throughout by a rock-steady rhythm section and overlaid with layers of brass, sax, and organ, all coaxing the listener to join the party.

Exploring the work of others and re-imagining them for ‘Hard Times’ was a natural step for Whyte Horses given Dom’s background as a DJ, cratedigger, and founder of Manchester-based Finders Keepers – the respected underground vinyl reissue label - but it’s also led to the group’s most ambitious collaborative project to date. Bringing together covers as diverse as the Bee Gee’s ‘Mr. Natural’ to Nancy Sinatra’s ‘Bang Bang’, Whyte Horses have brought in an esteemed list of vocal collaborators including Badly Drawn Boy, La Roux, Gruff Rhys, Chrysta Bell (Twin Peaks) and many more, alongside John Grant on the title track (full track listing & collaborators list below).
After selecting records and laying them down on top of one another at home in a DIY manner, the band headed to an isolated studio on the Isle of Wight to record ‘Hard Times’ in full. “We don’t go into the studio until the very last moment,” Dom says of the collective’s seven current members. “We all do the demo stuff at home because that’s the way we like to work: everything is pretty much arranged in my head and then I go into the studio and we intensively get them down in quite a short amount of time. Once in the studio, that’s where things come to life.”
Having made a return to the live stage with a typically raucous performance aboard Belle & Sebastian’s Boaty Weekender Cruise this summer, Whyte Horses will mark the release of the ‘Hard Times’ album with a rare hometown show at Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music on Saturday 18th January 2020. From there the band will embark on a brief trip to the US where they’ll headline The Masonic Lodge in LA (10th March 2020) and the equally impressive National Sawdust in NYC (12th March 2020). Tickets for all dates are on sale now via the official Whyte Horses website.
